![]() I would put a good mechanical pump back on if it was my car. If the motor shuts off and the pump stays running it can flood the carb and over flow, like in an accident. They can be dangerous if not wired correctly. Remove the two bolts that secure the pump to the side of the timing chain cover with a socket wrench. Rotate the integral nut on the tip of the metal fuel line in a counterclockwise direction with an open-end wrench until the line comes off the pump. I have an inline electric fuel pump from a Merkur XR4Ti that Im using in my 2. The cap was not venting and the fuel pump was creating a vacuum in the tank. When I opened the cap you could see the tail lamp panel move out a little. When you ran the car and shut it off you could hear a hissing noise from the cap. The vent on an old Mustang is built into the gas cap. You will need to install a regulator if that is the case. If it is too high it will flood the engine. Fuel psi for a street car should be around 4-5 psi. Where is the pump mounted? It should be at the fuel tank and below or at least even with the bottom of the tank. You say you ran it from a jerry can, if so what were you using to pump the fuel? Did you stick the hose to the electric pump in the can? If it ran this way then it's not the pump.
